If a creature with flying would be destroyed, but an Aura with the totem armor ability is destroyed instead, Whiptongue Hydra won't count that creature or that Aura as a "creature destroyed this way." Thats especially important for cards like Roxanne or Ordinary Rod which are useless in the early game: youll usually want other cards more in the early game
For the most part, this works well, but it sometimes goes a little bit off the rails, and Camouflage is a pretty good example of how extreme that can go
